18McGee Bldg Stairwell Transformation

The 18McGee Building sits on the southwest corner of McGee & East 18th Street in Kansas City, MO in the historic Crossroads Automobile Row Area. It was designed in 1950 by Edward Tanner and purchased for renovation in 2019 by 3D Development.

In keeping with their core ideas based on blending contemporary spaces with historic elements, owner Vince Bryant (Founder of 3D Development) decided to turn an old stairwell into a main focal point as you enter from the North Main Entrance. After removing 3 stories of walls, what remained was some very unattractive raw concrete stringers.  However, the treads and risers were beautiful black terrazzo with only light wear and damage.  RETROPROS worked closely with SRKO and 3D Development to create a design that included faceplates to hide the raw concrete stringers and block tread & riser extensions all cast from terrazzo to match the original.  

Once all fabrication and installation was complete, we made repairs as necessary and polished the entire stair set to a 400-grit finish.  We also utilized marble reclaimed from other areas of the building to finish out the landings and main floor entrance area.  The entire project took us approximately 3 months to complete and turned out beautiful!
